Looking for the Ocean Wise symbol is an easy way to tell if a seafood is sustainable when you’re shopping or dining in Canada. But what should you do if you’re traveling outside North America, or happen to find an imported seafood like ribbonfish or kingfish that you are not familiar with?

Luckily, Ocean Wise seafood program is part of the Global Seafood Ratings Alliance (GSRA). The GSRA is an alliance of sustainable seafood NGOs from five continents across the world who help each other to improve sustainability globally. Member NGOs are from the United States, Canada, New Zealand, Costa Rica, Australia, Japan, Brazil, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom.

Working together means organizations can share strategies that have worked for their own country, identify and prioritize the most pressing sustainable seafood issues globally, and create a database that incorporates every member’s seafood ratings, amongst other projects.

New Zealand’s Best Fish Guide is a handy resource on local NZ seafood species.

 

Australia’s Marine Conservation Society’s Seafood Guide splits seafood up into three different categories.

 

Mr. Goodfish’s poster recommends several wild fish from different regions around France, as well as farmed fish.
