Project Lead

Developing an ROV (Remote Operated Vehicle) for educational outreach and MateROV, a competition directed at creating ROVs in regard to ocean conservation. We will be promoting ocean awareness and ocean-tech education on social media and club-run events.

Project Description

So far, our project fostered an ocean-student presence at our university, which has never been the case in the past. Those at our university now have a means of applying themselves into ocean technology, and we plan on expanding to more public outreach events in the future.

This project has been created in commemoration of the lives of all the victims of Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302, including two Ocean Bridge ambassadors, Danielle Moore and Micah Messent. We aspire to carry on their legacy and commitment to making the world a better place by creating long-lasting impacts with a firm commitment to driving positive change for the environment and our ocean. We will never forget the light that Danielle and Micah brought to the world and will continue to keep them in our hearts. To learn more about these two amazing people, please visit: Honouring Danielle and Micah  – Ocean Wise. This work is partially funded by the Commemoration Fund for Victims of Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 Tragedy.

What was your biggest challenge?

‘Our biggest challenge as of yet is the pushback from our University’s student society organization, as they do not wish to have any water-related clubs as their insurance does not cover water activities. Although we cannot attain funding of materials, supplies, and spaces from them, Ocean Wise’s funding has helped us plan without as much worry in that regard.

What was your most valuable takeaway?

It is clear that there is a great importance surrounding the need for more accessible ocean education, even in places like our University which is supposed to be a beacon of education yet provide limited steps into the marine scene.
