A shoreline cleanup at Royal City Park in Guelph
Project Description
Jess Tan and Izzy Balcerzak hosted a Shoreline and Park clean up in Guelph, Ontario. Over 25 members of the public participated in the cleanup at Royal City Park. This clean-up was registered on Ocean Wise’s shoreline cleanup page and they sorted and recorded what they found to contribute to national citizen science plastic research. Notable trash collected includes 7 tires from the river and many, many cigarette butts! If you want to participate in a clean up in your community head over to our Shoreline Cleanup Page to host or join the effort!
What was your biggest challenge?
The biggest challenged faced in this project was spreading the word! With a tight turn around to deliver the project we couldn’t reach as many people as we wanted. However, word of mouth played a big factor and we were able to have 25 people attend and help clean up the park. Other passerby’s walking in the park also stopped to join in when they heard what we were trying to accomplish.
What was your most valuable takeaway?
The most valuable takeaway we had was that so many people care and want to help our watersheds! We just need to find ways to facilitate action and bring people together.
