Sustainable Seafood
Salmon are important for creating balance to ecosystems in our ocean and on land. When you protect these culturally significant fish today, you’re providing nourishment to animals from grizzly bears to heron, supporting our economy and allowing our ocean to flourish.

Protect their food chain and ours!
Many Canadians know us from our ‘happy fish’ logo, which makes choosing sustainable seafood easier when you're getting ready to feed yourself and your loved ones.
By taking this small action when you stroll down the grocery aisle or look through a menu, you’re helping ensure both humans and our animal friends can nourish themselves well into the future.
What you may not know is that thanks to the compassion of donors like you, our work goes beyond the logo. This includes ensuring salmon populations off the coast of British Columbia don’t just survive but can thrive through our Ocean Wise Rapid Assessment Standard and the Salmon Advisory Panel we launched in 2024.
Salmon aren’t just important for our economy and feeding humans. They are vital to the survival of other species both on land and in our waters. In British Columbia both grizzly and black bears rely on salmon abundance for their health and survival. Studies show that bear populations benefit, both individually and as a whole, because diets high in this nutritious protein source have been shown to affect the number of cubs birthed, bear size and population density within large regions.
Isn’t it incredible to think that your small act today can protect one of the most magnificent predators?
You’ll play a big role in protecting salmon populations so bears and other species can thrive by acting now. If these animals and our ocean hold an important place in your heart, perhaps you’ll make a special gift of $20 or join our pod of compassionate monthly donors.
The issues facing salmon populations are diverse and nuanced. Learning from the devastated East Coast salmon populations it is important to act now. In 2024, Ocean Wise developed a new method for assessing the sustainability of B.C. salmon, which combines our Rapid Assessment Standard with unique guidance from the Salmon Advisory Panel, to launch 14 unique recommendations for B.C. salmon.
Your support today means this critical work can be scaled up and that we can update our recommendations annually as we see fluctuations in the ecosystem and economy.
