A letter from Ocean Wise president and CEO regarding the Vancouver Aquarium
I am extremely happy to be able to share the news that the future of the Vancouver Aquarium is now assured thanks to an agreement to transfer ownership to a great new operator, Herschend Enterprises.
When our board initiated the process to find a partner who could ensure the long-term success and sustainability of the Vancouver Aquarium, we weren’t interested in any partner – we were interested in the right partner. One who shared the Aquarium’s values, understood what makes it so special, and appreciates the unique significance of the Vancouver Aquarium in the local and national community. We have found that partner in Herschend.
This is a tremendous outcome that not only sets the Vancouver Aquarium up to thrive, but Ocean Wise, too. Through this process, we have gained Herschend as an ally in our conservation mission through our mutual desire for collaboration, and through their generous annual donation of 1% of gross Aquarium revenues to further the conservation work of Ocean Wise.
With the Aquarium’s future secured, I am excited to be able to put 100% of Ocean Wise’s focus on our core goal of accelerating our bold and ambitious Decade to Turn the Tide: 2030 Conservation Strategy to improve the health of the world’s oceans. Not only will Ocean Wise continue as an independent charitable non-profit with well-known programs including Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup, Ocean Wise Seafood, Ocean Bridge, and many others – we will also scale and replicate our successful initiatives across Canada and around the world.
Hundreds of thousands of people of all ages participate in Ocean Wise programs every year. This number continues to grow rapidly as people from all walks of life join our wave of change to address the health of our oceans. Thanks to the support of thousands of individual donors, government grants, corporate partners and philanthropic foundations, Ocean Wise has a diversity of funders working with us to drive deep change over the coming decade.
Now is the time to roll up our sleeves and get to work saving our oceans. And we need everyone to take action: you, your family, your neighbours, companies and governments. This is an ‘all-hands-on-deck’ time for humanity and we have no time to waste!
Thank you for your ongoing support of Ocean Wise. We are excited about the future and what we will accomplish together.
President & CEO, Ocean Wise
