VANCOUVER, B.C. – Vancouver Aquarium Marine Science Centre (VAMSC) is pleased to announce the appointment of James Bartram as its new vice president of education. In this newly created role, Bartram will lead a professional team of educators working to expand the organization’s impressive curriculum-based education programs, AquaCamps, AquaClubs, and AquaVan – its mobile classroom on wheels that travels to far-reaching communities across Canada.
A key focus area for Bartram will be to further build on strategic partnerships with like-minded organizations and institutions that have a deep interest in protecting our world’s freshwater and ocean environments and those who use education as a major tool in engaging people to care about nature. Bartram will also work closely with the Coastal Ocean Research Institute to integrate research into education programs, such as citizen science, which is one more way people can help effect positive change.
Vancouver Aquarium Marine Science Centre’s educational programming includes programs for approximately 70,000 students each year at the Aquarium, AquaVan, its mobile education program that travels across British Columbia and occasionally into Alberta, AquaCamps, AquaClubs, field trips, public outreach, summer group programs, online courses and other digital education-based applications that will be developed in the near future. VAMSC’s education portal aims to connect people, young and old, to continuous learning through its conservation programs and research studies. Whether through an online exhibit or a class field trip, aquatic engagement brings to life the world underneath our glassy waters.
Most recently, Bartram was the education director with the Canadian Wildlife Federation. Prior to his role with CWF, he was the founder and the education director with The Parks Canada Palisades Stewardship Education Centre in Jasper where he spent eight years developing this unique youth engagement program. Bartram has an MA in Educational Management from the University of Warwick and a BSc (Honors) in Design Technology Education from the University of Sunderland, and has taught at secondary schools in Canada, United Kingdom and New Zealand.
