Vancouver Aquarium Kicks Off 2020 with Divers’ Weekend

The Vancouver Aquarium, an Ocean Wise® initiative, is starting the new decade with an in-depth look into the world of diving with the 21st annual Divers’ Weekend. This much-loved event, that is open to everyone, offers ocean enthusiasts an opportunity to take a deeper dive into the fascinating underwater world through the eyes of a diver. Divers and non-divers alike enjoyriveting dive demonstrations, intriguing exhibits, and informative presentations, inspiring them to explore and protect our vast oceans. Divers’ Weekend offers a chance for those with a passion for diving, or an interest to learn about it, to come together with experts in the field.

“Citizen Science is a growing trend where people are applying their love of diving to help gather data on our natural world” says Jeremy Heywood, the Vancouver Aquarium’s diving and boating safety officer and organizer of Divers’ Weekend. “We chose it as a theme this year to highlight the important role that citizens can play in expanding knowledge of our oceans. We have a lineup of exciting experts on this topic, as well as a range of other displays related to the diving world. You don’t want to miss this.”

The speaker line-up will feature experts on a range of topics related to diving, including deep glass sponge reefs, six-gill sharks, and underwater archeology. The topic of citizen science will be threaded through the talks, showcasing how divers of every ability can get involved with ocean conservation. The Divers’Weekend Speaker Series will take place from 10:30 am – 3:00 pm each day and include the following programs:

Saturday, January 25, 2020

Sunday, January 26, 2020

In addition to these special presentations, visitors will have the opportunity see displays from more than 25 exhibitors, not-for-profit conservation organizations, dive stores, charter operators, underwater photographers as well as equipment manufacturers and distributors. Demonstration dives highlighting scientific diving techniques will occur at 12:30pm each day in the Pacific Canada Gallery, and a demonstration dive featuring vintage hard hat equipment will take place at 2:30pm in the Tropic Gallery with the sharks.

Divers’ Weekend activities run from 10 am to 5 pm on January 25 and 26 and are included with standard Vancouver Aquarium admission.

Special to this weekend, when visitors present a valid diving certification card, they receive a 50 per cent discount on admission or 10 per cent discount on Vancouver Aquarium membership. To learn more about Divers’ Weekend, visit vanaqua.org/diversweekend.
