Coastal Ocean Research Institute
Whether they’re launching research drones to collect whale snot, putting cameras on sea lions or bouncing infrared light off ocean sediment, scientists at the Coastal Ocean Research Institute (CORI) are doing work that is changing the way we see the ocean. CORI is an independent, multidisciplinary, collaboration-based institute that fills a role in understanding and managing our coastal ocean environments. It systematically collects, analyzes, and publicly communicates data describing the health of coastal ecosystems on Canada’s West Coast.
Educating Future Generations
Knowledge is power. It is the power to change, to impact and to inspire. The Ocean Wise Education Institute empowers inquiring minds of all ages to learn more about the world’s oceans, lakes and rivers. Through experiential learning, digital social interactions and educational tools, students of the Institute will dive deep into the wonders of Earth’s underwater worlds and discover how they can help protect its precious life. Over the last 60 years, our programs have reached more than 3 million people. Our goal is to double that number in the next five years.
Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup
Protecting Shorelines and Wildlife
The Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup, presented by Loblaw Companies Limited is a national conservation initiative of the Vancouver Aquarium and WWF-Canada that provides Canadians the opportunity to take action in their communities wherever water meets land, one bit of trash at a time. Help to maintain the homes of animals in your area right now by finding and joining a cleanup near you. Or choose a date and location, rally a team, and lead your own cleanup event.
Ocean Wise Seafood Program
Ensuring Healthy Oceans
Overfishing is one of the greatest threats our oceans are facing today. The Ocean Wise sustainable seafood program helps to ensure that ocean life will be abundant for generations to come. The Ocean Wise symbol on seafood items makes it easier for consumers to pick out sustainable seafood options at grocery stores and in restaurants.
Connecting People To Ocean Life
A sanctuary in the heart of Stanley Park, the Vancouver Aquarium is home to thousands of incredible ocean species and amazing aquatic life. It’s also Ocean Wise headquarters, where our scientists, educators and conservation experts do their work, not only to protect our oceans but to inspire others to join us in our mission. Since opening in 1956, the Vancouver Aquarium has connected more than 40 million people from around the world to our oceans and all the wonders within them.
