Meet the Ocean Bridge Team

Ocean Bridge is a new national youth program from Ocean Wise bringing together 40 young Canadians to make the ocean a healthier, flourishing environment. Youth from across the country, with diverse backgrounds and varying levels of experience, will meet up every month via video conference and discuss service projects. Later this spring, Ocean Bridge will go on an expedition to Haida Gwaii, BC, and take part in another trip. As part of the federally funded National Programs of the Canada Service Corps, Ocean Bridge will empower youth from coast to coast to serve their communities and the environment.

Portail Océan, un programme jeunesse mis sur pied par Ocean Wise, réunit 40 jeunes Canadiens qui partagent un but commun : redonner toute leur santé et leur vigueur aux océans. Ce projet fait partie du Programme Jeunesse Canada, qui a pour mission d’aider les jeunes des quatre coins du pays à se mettre au service de leur communauté.

Les membres de ce groupe proviennent de milieux divers, et chacun contribuera sa propre expérience à l’ensemble. Chaque mois, les participants se rencontreront par vidéoconférence pour discuter des projets en cours. En outre, ils feront ensemble deux voyages dans le courant de l’année, notamment une expédition à Haida Gwaii ce printemps.

Chúk Odenigbo: A Francophone originally from Calgary, Alberta, Chúk is currently living in Montreal where he is finishing his graduate studies. As a Public Health student, he believes that the preservation of the ocean is of paramount importance to human health.

Francophone originaire de Calgary (Alberta), Chúk vit actuellement à Montréal (Québec) où il termine ses études de deuxième cycle. La nature et les océans comptent beaucoup pour lui, qui étudie en santé publique, et il estime que la préservation des océans est d’une importance capitale.

Alina Lizotte: As the Executive Director of the NWT Metis Cultural Institute in Fort Resolution, Northwest Territories, Alina feels that her tradition and lifestyle are directly connected to the waterways. Her grandfather hunts and traps fish in order to feed her family. Alina recently completed a semester with Grant MacEwan University in the Arts & Cultural Management Program and is committed to continuing her education in the near future.

Actuellement directrice administrative de l’institut culturel métis des T.-N.-O. à Fort Resolution. Pour Alina, son mode de vie et ses traditions sont directement liés à l’eau, car son grand-père pêche encore le poisson pour nourrir sa famille. Alina a récemment terminé un semestre d’études à l’Université Grant MacEwan dans le cadre du programme Arts & Cultural Management, et elle compte bien poursuivre ses études dans un proche avenir.

Alexandra Anaviapik: Alexandra is an Inuk from Mittimatalik, Inuktitut name for the Hamlet of Pond Inlet, Nunavut, who has witnessed the damaging effects of climate change on wildlife. She is excited join Ocean Bridge and use this experience to help her community situated in North Baffin Island.

Pour avoir constaté les effets des bouleversements climatiques et le déclin de la faune environnante dans son coin de pays, Alexandra est très heureuse de prendre part au programme Portail Océan, et elle a l’intention de mettre l’expérience qu’elle y acquerra au service de sa communauté. Alexandra est une Inuite de Mittimatalik, le nom en Inuktitut du hameau de Pond Inlet, au Nunavut, au nord de l’île de Baffin.

Danika Lalonde: Third-year Health Sciences student, Danika, is fluent in both French and English. She loves to explore and make memories while helping the planet. For her, it is extremely important to keep our waters safe and live healthy lives.

Étudiante de troisième année en sciences de la santé, Danika maîtrise l’anglais et le français. Elle aime explorer et faire mémoire de ses découvertes tout en aidant la planète. Pour Danika, il est extrêmement important pour notre santé de veiller sur nos ressources en eau.

Connor McDowell: Conner is a photographer from Mississauga, Ontario who is driven to make positive change to the future of our planet. He completed a Bachelor of Arts in Tourism and Environment from Brock University and has a post-graduate diploma from Fleming College in Environmental Visual Communication at the Royal Ontario Museum.

Photographe résidant à Mississauga (Ontario). Conner souhaite ardemment contribuer à assurer un meilleur avenir à la planète. Bachelier ès Arts en tourisme et environnement de l’Université Brock, il détient également un diplôme de cycle supérieur en communication environnementale visuelle du Fleming College du Musée royal de l’Ontario.

Curtis Onaczyszyn: Curtis is passionate about civil society, culture, environment, globalization, sports, and technology. He is from Woodstock, Ontario.

Curtis est passionné par de nombreux sujets – société civile, culture, environnement, mondialisation, sports et technologie. Il est originaire de Woodstock (Ontario).

Da Chen: Da is a recent graduate of the University of Toronto, Scarborough, with a double major in City Studies and Political Science. He is looking forward to learning new skills and tools to better engage urban audiences about the importance of ocean conservation.

Da est un jeune diplômé de l’Université de Toronto à Scarborough. Il a obtenu une double majeure, en études urbaines et sciences politiques, et souhaite acquérir de nouvelles compétences et de nouveaux moyens qui l’aideront ensuite à sensibiliser des auditoires urbains à l’importance de la conservation des océans.

Bradly Matsubara: Having recently graduated from the Human Environment program at Concordia University in December of 2016, Bradley has since been working as an account specialist for an industrial supplies company. He fell in love with oceans when he was first introduced to scuba diving in 2013 and has since been trying to get involved in as much as he can.

Bachelier en environnement humain de l’Université Concordia depuis décembre 2016. Bradly travaille actuellement comme spécialiste des comptes auprès d’une entreprise de fournitures industrielles. Amoureux de l’océan depuis sa première expérience en plongée autonome en 2013, il recherche toutes les occasions d’agir pour leur protection.

Danielle Moore: Currently living in Winnipeg, Danielle graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Marine Biology and Oceanography from Dalhousie University where she studied right whale feeding habitat and whale vocalizations. Throughout her studies, she studied the ocean from multiple locations including Costa Rica, Bermuda, and Israel.

Danielle vit actuellement à Winnipeg. Bachelière en biologie marine et en océanographie de l’Université Dalhousie, elle a étudié l’habitat d’alimentation de la baleine noire grâce au chant des baleines dans le cadre de sa thèse. Tout au long de ses études universitaires, elle a eu la chance d’étudier des océans à travers la planète, notamment au Costa Rica, aux Bermudes et en Israël.

Alex Ritz: Living in Vancouver, BC, Alex is a forest technician whose long-term goal is to merge natural resource management with conservation. He grew up in Kitchener, Ontario and has a Bachelor of Science in Wildlife Biology. Alex is excited to get involved with Ocean Bridge and hopes to expand his conservation knowledge and skills.

Vit à Vancouver (C.-B.). Alex est technicien forestier et il rêve d’arriver un jour à fusionner la gestion des ressources naturelles et la conservation. Alex a grandi à Kitchener (Ontario). Il est bachelier en biologie de la faune. Il est très excité de participer à l’expérience Portail Océan, et il espère bien approfondir ses connaissances et compétences en conservation.
