Meet the Small-Scale Fisheries We're Working With

Located on the Miramichi River, the Natoaganeg Striped Bass Fishery harvests from one of the few abundant striped bass populations in Canada. This fishery is one of a few in Canada to hold a licence for commercially harvesting wild striped bass. Fishers use traditional riverside traps built from logs and netting, allowing for a selective harvest with minimal impact on the surrounding environment.

We’re developing a first-of-its-kind assessment approach that incorporates both Indigenous Knowledge and data collected directly by members of the fishery. Together we’re also exploring whether a sustainable striped bass harvests can help reduce predation pressure on the river’s endangered Atlantic salmon populations.
