Meet the Small-Scale Fisheries We're Working With

For generations, the Gitanyow First Nation has stewarded and harvested at their traditional fishing site, Lax An Zok, along the Meziadin River. The fishery prioritizes Food, Social and Ceremonial harvesting for the community before any commercial harvesting begins. Harvesters catch returning Sockeye salmon with dip nets and fishwheels, which are both high selective fishing methods.

In 2024, Gitanyow’s Sockeye Salmon dip-net fishery became Ocean Wise Recommended through Ocean Wise’s unique methodology for assessing B.C. salmon fisheries. The fishery continues to work with Ocean Wise to ensure the assessment framework used to assess its sustainability reflects its priorities for long-term sustainability
