Meet the Small-Scale Fisheries We're Working With

The Mowachaht/Muchalaht First Nation manages a rights-based, community fishery for Chinook Salmon on the West Coast of Vancouver Island, with members harvesting in the Conuma River and other local waters. They have also established “Salmon Parks,” an initiative protecting nearly 39,000 hectares of critical old-growth ecosystems from industrial logging to support the restoration of vulnerable salmon habitats.

The Mowachaht/Muchalaht First Nation is working with Ocean Wise to develop a sustainability assessment that reflects Traditional Knowledge and local, place-based conservation priorities. Together, we’re developing an approach that supports resilient salmon ecosystems while strengthening the Nation’s food security and economic opportunities.
