Escape to sunny coral reefs, the depths of the deep ocean or underwater along British Columbia’s coast with our Ocean Wise Educator as your guide. Our seniors programs are adapted to the audience, for some fun and engagement. Invite us in as a guest speaker while staying physically distant. Is there more to kelp than meets the eye? This slimy species creates habitats for thousands of marine animals and is what makes up the enchanting underwater forests along the west coast. Through trivia and discussions, students will take a closer look at this green giant, how it can be used as a sustainable resource and how it might just be the next big climate change solution.

What has 3,000 teeth, travels at 50km/h and doesn’t have bones? Get up close and personal, virtually, with one of the world’s most infamous apex predators. Join us as we discover the superhero powers of sharks, their valuable place in a coral reef ecosystem, and maybe unveil a softer side to this fantastic fish.

Join an Ocean Wise Educator and explore the most extreme environment on the planet! Embark on a journey through the seasons and learn about the different adaptations animals possess to survive in such a challenging environment. Through stories, body movements, and learning from animals, students will learn similarities and difference between the arctic and their own home.

Primary/Pre-K

Coral reefs are home to 25% of known oceanic animals. Something isn’t quite right in this coral reef as the superhero of the reef has gone missing. Collect clues and complete challenges by interacting with different reef animals to uncover who the superhero is and bring them back to the reef. This program will explore biodiversity in coral reefs, what threats they are facing and what we can do to help them recover.

Intermediate

How deep is deep? Well the deepest place in the ocean we know of is about 11 km (36,200 ft) below the surface! How do animals survive in the dark and under extreme pressures? How do they hunt? What do they eat? Join an Ocean Wise Educator live, where we will dive into the deep and explore interesting facts of the deep sea and adaptations of the sea creatures that live there. Participants will discuss the importance of ocean exploration and ways that we can uncover the ocean’s mysteries.

Intermediate, Secondary

Explore whales of the West Coast of Canada as an Ocean Wise whale researcher ‘virtually’ with an Educator. Explore how to identify common whale species, what makes them different from one another, and how we can learn more from them like a scientist!

Primary, Intermediate

Aren’t babies just the cutest? In this program we go through the different phases of an animals lifecycle and discuss their different adaptations. Complete challenges and answer questions to help a mystery ocean animal develop from an egg into its final adult form.

Intermediate, Secondary

Students will be introduced to the phyla Cephalopoda and the key characteristics that make this group of squids, octopuses, and cuttlefish so spectacular by joining our expert educator for a live squid dissection.

Through an examination of the squid’s anatomy students will discuss how animal’s adaptations help them to survive in their environment. Recommended for Grades 5-12.
