Project Lead

Fostering student engagement on UBC campus through knowledge sharing and community building among those who are interested in getting involved in the marine conservation space.

Project Description

We held 2 guest speaker events and two movie screenings to increase awareness surrounding various topics that are key to marine conservation, such as deep seabed mining, coral bleaching, and science communication. In addition, we partnered with a local zero waste refill station to paint reusable glass pumps to combat single use plastic. Overall these events were used as a space for individuals on UBC Vancouver Campus who are interested in marine conservation to come together, connect, and create a community.

This project has been created in commemoration of the lives of all the victims of Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302, including two Ocean Bridge ambassadors, Danielle Moore and Micah Messent. We aspire to carry on their legacy and commitment to making the world a better place by creating long-lasting impacts with a firm commitment to driving positive change for the environment and our ocean. We will never forget the light that Danielle and Micah brought to the world and will continue to keep them in our hearts. To learn more about these two amazing people, please visit: Honouring Danielle and Micah  – Ocean Wise. This work is partially funded by the Commemoration Fund for Victims of Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 Tragedy.

What was your biggest challenge?

The biggest challenge for our team was to manage the limited time we all had between school, work, and other initiatives, We were able to overcome this challenge through clear communication among our executive team and helping out one another even if the task at hand was outside of one’s specific job responsibilities.

What was your most valuable takeaway?

That even though we are merely a small student led organization that does not have much notoriety or funding, we can make our big ideas into reality by reaching out to people we want to collaborate with even if we may not always get a response.
