Project Description

The Monthly Cycle organizes monthly social rides for women, trans, femme and non-binary riders in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Since our start in the summer of 2021, we’ve offered group rides and supplementary workshops that promote the idea that cycling can (and should be) fun, safe, and inclusive. The mission of our community is to welcome, encourage and uplift riders that are underrepresented in cycling, and to foster a safe space for building confidence on two wheels.

The main component of TMC is a casual monthly group ride of 10-15 km on primarily separated bike paths, at a social “no-drop” pace, and with a scenic snack stop. All styles of bikes are welcome, and we’ve been lucky to acquire a few extra bikes to lend to new riders. If flat tires or mechanical issues occur on a ride, everyone stops, and we use it as a learning opportunity for the group. We’ve also hosted two introductory maintenance workshops to help participants feel more comfortable attempting their own repairs or engaging with local shops.

This year we also hosted a few specialty bike events: a fat bike clinic in the winter, a mountain bike clinic in the spring and our second annual bike camping trip in the fall. These events allowed people to try new ways to experience cycling in our community.

Climate change is likely the most detrimental impact on ocean health at this time. Choosing to ride a bike is inherently climate action, and through our program we aim to encourage cycling as a form of transportation and recreation and to break down some barriers which exist to women and gender diverse people.

This project has been created in commemoration of the lives of all the victims of Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302, including two Ocean Bridge ambassadors, Danielle Moore and Micah Messent. We aspire to carry on their legacy and commitment to making the world a better place by creating long-lasting impacts with a firm commitment to driving positive change for the environment and our ocean. We will never forget the light that Danielle and Micah brought to the world and will continue to keep them in our hearts. To learn more about these two amazing people, please visit: Honouring Danielle and Micah  – Ocean Wise. This work is partially funded by the Commemoration Fund for Victims of Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 Tragedy.

What was your most valuable takeaway?

The most valuable component of the project was the funding as it allowed us to carry out our planned programming while not having any registered status. Most other grants don’t give funding to individuals.
