Project Description
To establish a sustainable garden on a piece of private property for local youth to utilize in growing their own produce and, in doing so, to enhance youth food security in my community. This involved building beds, bringing in organic material, starting seeds and in the future will involve planting, maintaining, and harvesting from the garden. This project also aimed to regenerate the piece of barren land that it is built on to enhance biodiversity and native ecosystems.
This project has been created in commemoration of the lives of all the victims of Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302, including two Ocean Bridge ambassadors, Danielle Moore and Micah Messent. We aspire to carry on their legacy and commitment to making the world a better place by creating long-lasting impacts with a firm commitment to driving positive change for the environment and our ocean. We will never forget the light that Danielle and Micah brought to the world and will continue to keep them in our hearts. To learn more about these two amazing people, please visit: Honouring Danielle and Micah – Ocean Wise. This work is partially funded by the Commemoration Fund for Victims of Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 Tragedy.
What was your biggest challenge?
It was challenging to coordinate timing/location around soil delivery given the time parameters and space available but I was able to call on my community for support and ultimately found a solution that worked very well.
What was your most valuable takeaway?
That change does not need to be big and it does not need to happen on a global scale. Thinking globally while acting locally may be the answer to this environmental crisis we are currently living in.
