Project Lead

Our club is dedicated towards aiding the lives of individuals experiencing homlessness in the DTES. In consideration to our target audience and Mother's Day in May, we wanted to create care packages while tying into and being mindful of our plastic contribution. Likewise, we took into consideration of the businesses we bought from and buying bulk, ultimately limiting our waste.

Project Description

My team and I will be putting together 75 sustainable care packages made with love, dedicated to those experiencing homelessness in the Downtown EastSide. We wanted to highlight female identifying individuals, so namely women were our main target. To tie it together, our distribution of these care packages will occur closer to Mother’s Day.

This project has been created in commemoration of the lives of all the victims of Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302, including two Ocean Bridge ambassadors, Danielle Moore and Micah Messent. We aspire to carry on their legacy and commitment to making the world a better place by creating long-lasting impacts with a firm commitment to driving positive change for the environment and our ocean. We will never forget the light that Danielle and Micah brought to the world and will continue to keep them in our hearts. To learn more about these two amazing people, please visit: Honouring Danielle and Micah  – Ocean Wise. This work is partially funded by the Commemoration Fund for Victims of Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 Tragedy.

What was your biggest challenge?

My biggest challenge will most likely be coordinating a smooth assembly of the care packages. We have 80+ members in the club so I most likely will have to coordinate sign-ups. To ensure a smooth process I will have meetings to explain the process, assign people to certain areas, and have instructions on the quantity on a document for the members to follow along.

What was your most valuable takeaway?

My most valuable takeaway is how this event will impact not just our target community, but also the students at school that are helping with this project. Through this hands-on assembly, they will be able to see for themselves how heartfelt and impactful distributing a project, like care packages can be. It is also educational through certain areas of sustainability and ocean conservation and I cannot wait to see this project unfold closer to May.
