Project Description

Colouring for Conservation is a 40-page colouring book designed to teach people about species at risk across Canada. The book goes through challenges our planet is facing, like climate change, deforestation and pollution all of which affect species across Canada. Each species has a brief description including information about its range across Turtle Island and the traditional territories it lives on as well as a short description of the issues its facing and why it is a species at risk.

This project has been created in commemoration of the lives of all the victims of Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302, including two Ocean Bridge ambassadors, Danielle Moore and Micah Messent. We aspire to carry on their legacy and commitment to making the world a better place by creating long-lasting impacts with a firm commitment to driving positive change for the environment and our ocean. We will never forget the light that Danielle and Micah brought to the world and will continue to keep them in our hearts. To learn more about these two amazing people, please visit: Honouring Danielle and Micah – Ocean Wise. This work is partially funded by the Commemoration Fund for Victims of Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 Tragedy.

What was your biggest challenge?

My biggest challenge was with the app I was using to draw, Adobe Fresco stopped working while I was a quarter of the way through drawings. I tried and tried but I couldn’t fix the issue. So partway through the project I had to switch to procreate, which took a while to learn how to properly use and delayed me in making the book. For consistency, I had to redo all the drawings so that they would look cohesive. All of this took a lot longer than I thought it would but in the end we made it all work!

What was your most valuable takeaway?

My most valuable takeaway was about planning a launch party, there were a couple of things day of that delayed the set up and I could have been a bit clearer with instructions for set up for the event so that the staff didn’t have to wait for me to get there. Little details like tablecloths didn’t occur to me, so clarifying those things in advance of the event for future activities like this. I also learned that I can do hard things, that I am capable of having an impact and I can bring my ideas into reality!
