Collaboration for ocean conservation
Monterey Bay Aquarium's Seafood Watch Program has been a global leader in sustainable seafood for over 20 years. While our scoring systems differ Ocean Wise relies on Seafood Watch's rigorous Standard to assess fisheries and aquaculture programs.
The Seafood Watch Standards, and our assessment, varies depending on whether the the seafood option comes from a wild capture fishery (including salmonids) or aquaculture. See below for details about each.
Multiple ratings per assessment
Each wild capture fishery assessment results in product ratings based on three key variables: targeted species>harvest method(s) used>geographic region where fishing occurs. Multiple seafood products may be rated Ocean Wise Recommended from a single assessment.
A seafood product from a wild capture fishery can be considered Ocean Wise Recommended if it scores greater than 2.8 out of 5 with no critical scores.
