Ocean Wise Staff – 2018 Ocean Bridge Cohort

A bit about me:

My name is Ben (he/they) and I have been a Program Specialist for Ocean Bridge Classic (Pacific) since January 2020. I am a French Canadian with mixed Algonquin ancestry that was born and raised in Northern Ontario (Sudbury) on the traditional territory of the Atikameksheng Anishnawbek on Robinson-Huron treaty territory.

In 2018, I graduated from the University of Guelph with a BSc in Zoology/Marine and Freshwater Biology and became an Ambassador for the first-ever Ocean Bridge cohort! Shortly thereafter in 2019, I moved to Vancouver, the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), səlilwətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) nations and studied fisheries economics for a short while. I am starting a new journey at the Allard School of Law (UBC) in September 2022 and I look forward to continuing being involved in the Ocean Bridge community throughout my legal studies!

I am actively involved in the conversation surrounding social equity, particularly when it comes to liberating queer and Indigenous communities of settler-colonialism. My role at Ocean Wise involves working closely with Myriam, our Social Justice Manager, to lead the Ocean Bridge DEI working group and as such, I am continually looking for ways to foster safety and inclusion within our programming. I bring a unique collection of lived experiences to the team and show up authentically and with empathy in everything that I do. I enjoy forming mutually respectful and beneficial relationships with ambassadors and helping them along their journey of community-led service learning and engagement.

Excited to have you join our team! Feel free to reach me at [email protected] if you want to connect!

What get’s me out of bed in morning?

The thought of my morning coffee followed by said morning coffee. Hits the spot, every time. My golden retriever, Beau, will often wake me up with his snores or grumbles. Though on a more empowering note, knowing that every day is a new opportunity to show up for my community isn’t bad either!

A fun fact about me:

I’m currently converting a Ford E250 for #vanlife!
