SculptShore
Project Details
Based on a real right whale calf, this 6-metre-long baby whale has turned into a sought-after summer selfie as he migrates to the different cleanups and events, educating and empowering future action by focusing on the achievable and innovative solutions to the three main issues for our local right whales: ocean plastics, ship strikes, and entanglement.
Project Description
‘SculptShore is empowering communities through education, solutions, and direct action to answer the urgent call to action required to help save the critically endangered North Atlantic right whales.
This art-meets-action initiative is centered around a life-size interactive replica of a less-than-a-year-old calf, whose mother is the famous North Atlantic right whale Snow Cone (#3650).
Local clean-up organizations, communities, and individuals have filled the whale with over 1.5 TONNES of garbage, removing thousands of pieces of debris from the ocean.
We are grateful for the funds from the Foundation for Environmental Stewardship, Ocean Wise, and the Canadian Ocean Literacy Coalition, enabling us to make a meaningful impact in our community and further promote ocean conservation.
This project has been created in commemoration of the lives of all the victims of Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302, including two Ocean Bridge ambassadors, Danielle Moore and Micah Messent. We aspire to carry on their legacy and commitment to making the world a better place by creating long-lasting impacts with a firm commitment to driving positive change for the environment and our ocean. We will never forget the light that Danielle and Micah brought to the world and will continue to keep them in our hearts. To learn more about these two amazing people, please visit: Honouring Danielle and Micah – Ocean Wise. This work is partially funded by the Commemoration Fund for Victims of Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 Tragedy.
What was your biggest challenge?
I want to see this initiative grow and achieve so much more but I struggle with being able to focus and accomplish all of the different aspects that something of this scale needs. finding a team and figuring out where this initiative is going in the future is the goal for the coming seasons.
What was your most valuable takeaway?
‘I started out as a “Youth At Risk” by growing up below the poverty line. I have accomplished many things in my life however starting this SculptShore initiative from concept to where it is today makes me feel like i am now a “Youth At Risk Of Changing The World”.
