Navigating Local Waters and Promoting Microplastic Knowledge
Project Details
Our project is an experiment that tests microplastic levels in different water sources around the lower mainland of BC and Vancouver Island. It will achieve this by using different filtration methods on the water samples we collect in BC. After our group tests these microplastic levels across BC, we will present this in the form of a research article and statistical graphs.
Project Description
Microplastics worsen pollution and climate change due to their degradation and impact on ecosystems. The production and disposal of plastics release greenhouse gases, contributing to climate change. This problem could not go unnoticed or unoccupied, so my friends and I started a project that would assist in cleaning up the environment in our region. We wanted to have a better understanding of microplastic pollution in Richmond, British Columbia, and to do so, we ordered various filters in order to conduct research on the collected samples of microplastics.
This project has been created in commemoration of the lives of all the victims of Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302, including two Ocean Bridge ambassadors, Danielle Moore and Micah Messent. We aspire to carry on their legacy and commitment to making the world a better place by creating long-lasting impacts with a firm commitment to driving positive change for the environment and our ocean. We will never forget the light that Danielle and Micah brought to the world and will continue to keep them in our hearts. To learn more about these two amazing people, please visit: Honouring Danielle and Micah – Ocean Wise. This work is partially funded by the Commemoration Fund for Victims of Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 Tragedy.
What was your biggest challenge?
My biggest challenge was managing time and balancing various responsibilities. Juggling coursework, research, and extracurricular activities demanded careful organization and prioritization. To navigate this challenge, I adopted effective time management strategies such as creating detailed schedules, setting realistic goals, and breaking tasks into smaller, manageable chunks. Additionally, I learned to delegate tasks when possible and seek support from peers and mentors. By staying organized, maintaining open communication, and staying focused on my priorities, I was able to overcome this challenge and successfully fulfill my commitments while also maintaining a healthy work-life balance.
What was your most valuable takeaway?
The most valuable lesson learned from the action project/initiative is the importance of working together with others to tackle big problems. It’s like realizing that when we join forces and bring different skills and ideas to the table, we can accomplish much more than if we try to do everything alone. This project showed that teamwork and cooperation are key to making a real difference in the world
