Project Lead

Our project involves developing an ocean floor mapping technology prototype, addressing marine navigation, research, and security. Our prototype advances naval operations, research, and security while promoting safe navigation and sustainability. Dedicated to ocean exploration, our team drives this impactful solution.

Project Description

Our project, initially developed for the UVIC Ocean Challenge, focuses on the development of an autonomous ocean floor mapping technology prototype. The decision to pursue this project stems from its potential to address critical challenges in marine navigation, research, and security. By creating a prototype capable of efficiently and cost-effectively mapping the ocean floor, we aim to contribute to advancements in naval operations, marine research, and maritime security. The need for accurate and accessible ocean floor maps is crucial for ensuring safe navigation, enhancing our understanding of the marine environment, and promoting sustainable practices in various sectors. Our project team, driven by a passion for ocean exploration and technology innovation, is committed to continuing the development of this impactful solution.

This project has been created in commemoration of the lives of all the victims of Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302, including two Ocean Bridge ambassadors, Danielle Moore and Micah Messent. We aspire to carry on their legacy and commitment to making the world a better place by creating long-lasting impacts with a firm commitment to driving positive change for the environment and our ocean. We will never forget the light that Danielle and Micah brought to the world and will continue to keep them in our hearts. To learn more about these two amazing people, please visit: Honouring Danielle and Micah  – Ocean Wise. This work is partially funded by the Commemoration Fund for Victims of Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 Tragedy.

What was your biggest challenge?

Our biggest challenge was budgeting effectively and ensuring that our expenses were prioritized to align with the critical needs of the project. To navigate this challenge, we implemented a rigorous budgeting process that involved careful analysis of project requirements, thorough cost estimation, and continuous monitoring of expenditures. We prioritized essential expenses that directly contributed to achieving project milestones and goals, while also identifying areas where cost-saving measures could be implemented without compromising quality or effectiveness.

What was your most valuable takeaway?

My most valuable takeaway from this project is realizing the power of collaborative efforts to address complex challenges. Through teamwork, dedication, and innovation, we were able to develop a solution with the potential to make a significant impact on marine navigation, research, and security. This experience reaffirmed the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration, perseverance, and creative problem-solving in driving positive change.
