Project Description
The project referred to as Environmental Films and Discussions consists of two events. The first event takes place on January 20, 2024. The film that plays at the first event is called Chasing Ice. The documentary follows photographer James Balog and his team on the Extreme Ice Survey as they assemble a multi-year chronicle of the planet’s rapidly melting glaciers. The first event features a local guest speaker from Eco Connects, May Martinez, who leads a discussion after the film screening. Eco Connects’ mission is to deliver workshops, programs, one-on-one coaching sessions, and ecological landscaping that seek to bring more harmony to our relationship with nature and inspire action on the eco-crisis. The first event takes place at the Al Whittle Theatre in Wolfville, the Annapolis Valley, Nova Scotia. The second event takes place on February 18, 2024. The film that plays at the second event is called 2040. The documentary follows filmmaker Damon Gameau as he travels the world in search of new approaches and solutions to climate change, meeting with innovators and changemakers in many fields to draw on their expertise. The second event features a local guest speaker from the Clean Annapolis River Project (CARP), Jennifer Uhlman, who leads a discussion after the film screening. CARP’s mission is to enhance the ecological health of the Annapolis River watershed through science, leadership, and community engagement. The second event takes place at the Zedex Theatre in Greenwood, the Annapolis Valley, Nova Scotia.
This project has been created in commemoration of the lives of all the victims of Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302, including two Ocean Bridge ambassadors, Danielle Moore and Micah Messent. We aspire to carry on their legacy and commitment to making the world a better place by creating long-lasting impacts with a firm commitment to driving positive change for the environment and our ocean. We will never forget the light that Danielle and Micah brought to the world and will continue to keep them in our hearts. To learn more about these two amazing people, please visit: Honouring Danielle and Micah – Ocean Wise. This work is partially funded by the Commemoration Fund for Victims of Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 Tragedy.
What was your biggest challenge?
One of my biggest challenges was advertising for the environmental film and discussion events on social media platforms without having any social media pages specifically dedicated to my environmental film and discussion events. I was able to navigate this challenging by reaching out to other groups directly involved with the events that already had established social media pages.
What was your most valuable takeaway?
The most valuable takeaway from my environmental films and discussions is that an event is more likely to be successful if it has been planned well in advance. People are more likely to hear about an event if it has been advertised extensively. Planning in advance gives the event organizer enough time to identify plan B, and C, and so on.
