The Ocean Wise Whale Report App

Two levels of access. More ways to protect whales.

An estimated 20,000 whales are struck fatally by vessels each year. The Whale Report app empowers coastal communities and commercial mariners to work together in real time to protect whales from vessel strike and support critical marine conservation.

Whale Report is an upgraded and unified version of the widely used WhaleReport app and Whale Report Alert System app (WRAS), merging well-loved features with new and improved functionalities. These alerts are informed by a combination of verified user sightings and detections from, WhaleSpotter infrared technology and hydrophone arrays operated by JASCO Applied Sciences and SMRU Consulting.

Everyone can report whale sightings, and operators of large commercial vessels—such as ferries, tugs, cruise ships, freighters, and government vessels—can apply for access to real-time whale alerts via the Whale Report App.

For Reporters

Send a sighting. Save a whale

Sightings submitted in real time are transmitted to authorized commercial ships, prompting them to slow down or alter course—reducing the risk of striking or disturbing marine life.

Contribute to Conservation Research

Each sighting is reviewed and added to a research database, helping scientists monitor species occurrence and distribution over time.

Learn About Whales

Find out how to identify whale species in your area, learn about threats, and view marine mammal regulations and guidelines for responsible marine wildlife viewing.

For Mariners

Receive Alerts

Mariners can receive alerts when a detected whale is within 10 nautical miles of their vessel and can customize alert delivery through text, push notification, and/or email.

Set a Zone of Interest

Mariners can also choose to select an additional custom zone of interest from which to receive alerts.

View Whale Locations

An interactive map allows mariners to view whale locations within 3, 12, and 24 hours to help make informed decisions that protect whales.

Additional Whale Report Features

Sightings and real-time alerts are all in one place

A streamlined experience for reporters and improved efficiency for mariners.

View local regulations

An Interactive map makes viewing Marine Mammal Regulations and Guidelines easy.

Track your impact

Access personalized sightings records, including information on alerts generated.

Data Providers

Acartia.io

Ocean Wise has partnered with Acartia.io data cooperative to provide increased marine mammal detections into the Whale Report Alert System, particularily in Washington State. Acartia is a decentralized data cooperative for sharing marine animal locations within the Salish Sea. It is named for one of the smallest animals in Puget Sound - microscopic copepods - but was built to recover one of the biggest - the endangered Southern Resident killer whales.

Whale Alert

The Whale Alert app was launched in 2012 as a citizen science tool aimed at reducing the risk of vessel strikes. It empowers users to report whale sightings via an accessible interface, and informs users of speed zones, warnings, and other measures to reduce vessel speeds and reduce risks to whales and mariners.
