Join us at the Hall at Sherwood Mountain Brewery, Terrace, for this free event to learn all about whale conservation and science happening on the North Coast of B.C.! This speaker series will include:
- The importance of whale conservation in the region
- Ongoing research and monitoring efforts
- The power of community involvement and citizen science
- Practical actions you can take to support the safety of whales
Speaker details:
Marie Boluin – Skeena Wild
Marie will share an overview of Skeena Wild’s work, with a focus on the Skeena Estuary. Through striking underwater photos, she will highlight why estuaries are vital for salmon.
Kristen Powell – World Wildlife Foundation
Kristen will talk about shipping along the BC coast and how vessel traffic affects marine ecosystems. Her talk will touch on cumulative effects models, including ship speeds and underwater noise, and how this information is shared with different Nations.
Nicole Robinson – Gitgaat Ocean and Lands Department
Nicole will take us through her career journey and current work in marine conservation. She will share her experiences living on the coast and working alongside organizations like the North Coast Cetacean Society and BC Whales.
Ashley Bachert – Ocean Wise
Ashley will highlight local whale research and the citizen science programs that support it. She will share how community sightings and participation help scientists better understand whales in the area and contribute to marine conservation.
Olivia Heintzman and Greta Romas – Ocean Wise
To wrap up the session, Olivia and Greta will host a lively game of Jeopardy featuring questions inspired by all the speakers. This interactive activity will be a fun way to recap the evening and test your knowledge.
