Say Goodbye to Disposables: Five Easy Ways Your Business Can Reduce Plastic Waste

Ready to say goodbye to plastic? Ocean Wise, in partnership with Environment and Climate Change Canada and the Regional District of Nanaimo, has created a handy guide to help businesses reduce their plastic footprint. From reusables to smart shopping, we’ve rounded up five simple yet effective best practices that work for any business, anywhere.

Best Practice 1: Offer reusables to dine-in customers

In food and beverage operations, a “closed system” means the business controls every step, from ordering to clean-up. This setup is perfect for using reusable dishware, which cuts down on disposable waste, enhances the customer experience, and creates a cohesive, branded look. It also simplifies waste management by keeping everything in one dish pit.

For take-out orders, businesses can encourage customers to bring their own containers by setting clear guidelines on acceptable sizes and cleanliness. Promoting reusable options through in-store signage and having staff lead by example helps build a culture of sustainability.

Best Practice 2: Shop and source responsibly

Smaller businesses who rely less on suppliers can reduce plastic waste by opting for unpackaged produce, using reusable cloth bags, and choosing concentrated cleaners to avoid plastic bottles. Plus, buying locally sourced items like bread and produce not only reduces plastic packaging, but also cuts down on carbon emissions from transportation.

Best Practice 3: Work with your suppliers to reduce waste

Partnering with local suppliers can help businesses get customized products that minimize food waste and plastic packaging. By communicating your needs, you can inspire suppliers to provide more sustainable and cost-effective options. Building strong relationships with like-minded suppliers can also lead to tailored solutions, such as bulk deliveries or eco-friendly packaging alternatives.

Best Practice 4: Fine-tune your waste-management system

One of the best ways to reduce plastic waste without major investment is to have a clear waste management policy and effective signage. Simple, consistent signage with icons or images can guide proper disposal.

You can also encourage customers to reduce waste by bringing reusable cups, refilling bottles, and only requesting napkins or straws when necessary. Signage should also emphasize your business’ commitment to plastic reduction and encourage customer participation.

Best Practice 5: Bring recycling partners on board

To manage waste effectively, businesses should separate it into landfill, recyclables, and organics whenever possible. Don’t forget—hazardous materials like batteries and cleaning supplies should never go to the landfill. Instead, check your local drop-off locations and follow waste management guidelines to dispose of them safely.

Some small businesses choose to “self-haul” their waste to the landfill, which can save money but also takes time and effort. To reduce both costs and hassle, focus on recycling, diverting organics, and cutting down overall waste. Additionally, make sure to explore local Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) programs. These programs help businesses stay compliant and avoid extra costs by ensuring proper disposal of certain products.

These five best practices can be used by any business to reduce their plastic footprint. To learn more read our new best practice guide developed with the Regional District of Nanaimo and find more ways to reduce your single-use plastic footprint here.
