Tackling ocean issues can feel overwhelming, but our Sea the Solutions Workshops make learning easy and interactive. Educators gain the language and tools to explore key ocean challenges, drawing on real-world work from Ocean Wise. From cutting-edge research to innovative solutions and careers, students are inspired to understand issues and take action.

Grounded in curriculum connections, Traditional Ecological Knowledge, and leading education frameworks, these workshops build core competencies like creative thinking, problem solving, and environmental stewardship.

All workshops are comprised of two lessons:

  1. Teacher-led lesson First, you will be provided with an Ocean Wise lesson for you to run with your students to prime their learning, spark discussion, and build out a mind-map to demonstrate learning and explore related concepts. Slide decks are fully prepared with videos, graphics, quizzes, and speaker’s notes so all the educator will need to do is click-through!
  2. Ocean Wise-led lessonNext, an Ocean Wise Educator will join your class in-person to expand on this learning, engage in hands-on activities, and empower you with the solutions to protect and restore our ocean!

Available Workshops

Whales - Ocean Guardians

As sentinels in global climate systems and nutrient cycling, whales take care of our ocean and our planet. These giant guardians migrate through the ocean with ancestors dating back to 40 million years ago (Smithsonian Ocean, 2020). Not only are whales vital to ocean health, but they are also culturally significant to many Indigenous nations across Canada, supporting subsistence and spiritual practice for Inuit and Tsleil-Waututh, among other communities. Today, whales are threatened by countless environmental risks such as overfishing, noise pollution, and vessel strikes. Now more than ever, we must work together to protect whales!

Our Whales - Ocean Guardians Workshop explores the wonder of Whales and their connection to ocean health! Explore topics of marine mammal conservation and research and learn about ways that you can be a part of protecting our Ocean.

Be the Solution to Plastic Pollution

Our ocean is home to countless marine species under threat from plastic pollution, underwater noise and environmental toxins. But it’s not just the whales and salmon that pay the price — humans are at risk, too. Approximately 11 million tonnes of plastic waste enters our environment annually, expecting to increase even more by 2040. Now more than ever, it is crucial we work together to enact real change!

Our Be the Solution to Plastic Pollution Workshop is an exciting opportunity where YOU can provide your students with important knowledge on plastics! Our program provides hands-on activities and engaging discussion sessions for students, allowing them to explore scientific innovations, policy, and eco-careers!

Ocean Wise is based in the traditional and unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples, including the territories of the xÊ·məθkwÉ™y̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and SÉ™lÌ“ílwÉ™taÊ”/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. We work across Turtle Island and beyond, supporting Indigenous peoples in their vital work on ocean conservation and biodiversity whenever possible or as we are invited to.
