Two sustainable gift wrapping events were hosted during the month of December to promote the use of kraft paper wraps and cloth wraps as recyclable and reusable alternatives.
Project Description
I hosted two sustainable gift-wrapping events in my building community to introduce them to eco-friendly alternatives to holiday gift wraps. Holidays generally produce large amounts of waste due to plastic packaged gifts as well as the use of non-reusable or unrecyclable gift wrappers. My project is focused on providing residents with a workshop/demonstration where they can learn how to wrap using fabric wraps, kraft papers and bags. All types of wraps will be free for residents who have gifts that they would like to bring to the event.
This project has been created in commemoration of the lives of all the victims of Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302, including two Ocean Bridge ambassadors, Danielle Moore and Micah Messent. We aspire to carry on their legacy and commitment to making the world a better place by creating long-lasting impacts with a firm commitment to driving positive change for the environment and our ocean. We will never forget the light that Danielle and Micah brought to the world and will continue to keep them in our hearts. To learn more about these two amazing people, please visit: Honouring Danielle and Micah – Ocean Wise. This work is partially funded by the Commemoration Fund for Victims of Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 Tragedy.
What was your biggest challenge?
The biggest challenge was in pivoting my whole project due to the management/condo association in rejecting my initial idea of a furniture swap program.
What was your most valuable takeaway?
I learned that people are willing to use eco-friendly alternatives more easily provided that they are given resources (especially those that are free), dedicated time, and instructions in how to implement them.
