Pellet Percussions
Project Details
Pellet Percussions! Making music with nurdles.
Project Description
Utilized pre-production plastic pellets as fillings of percussion-based musical instruments such as maracas. Participants learnt about pre-production plastic pellet pollution, a contributor to plastic pollution, and had the opportunity to play the instruments they made together at the end of the workshop with real percussion instruments from U of T’s Hart House Orchestra. This event was supported by the Ocean Action Grant, U of T Trash Team, U of T Family Care and Hart House.
This project has been created in commemoration of the lives of all the victims of Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302, including two Ocean Bridge ambassadors, Danielle Moore and Micah Messent. We aspire to carry on their legacy and commitment to making the world a better place by creating long-lasting impacts with a firm commitment to driving positive change for the environment and our ocean. We will never forget the light that Danielle and Micah brought to the world and will continue to keep them in our hearts. To learn more about these two amazing people, please visit: Honouring Danielle and Micah – Ocean Wise. This work is partially funded by the Commemoration Fund for Victims of Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 Tragedy.
What was your biggest challenge?
Finding the right audience. I managed to navigate it by talking to many people, figuring out connections and suggestions from my community. Meetings with these people help me narrow down and find the right audience for my event. I was also sick for a week or two before budgeting was due but OAG granted an extension for submission and my partner helped lead a volunteer prep session for me which was very nice of him.
What was your most valuable takeaway?
Community matters. Having a strong support system can allow me to do big things I wouldn’t be able to accomplish on my own.
