I led a mending workshop during Feb 2022 Urban Learning journey and taught participants a large array of different types of Sashiko stitching and mending techniques in hopes to help others build a foundation to mend different types of clothes.

Project Description

Clothing can be difficult to recycle, but with a little bit of know-how, and some creative flair, worn clothing can be easily upcycled; that is, diverted from landfills and instead turned into something new. In this workshop, I went over some of the common techniques used in visible mending, such as the sashiko stitch and darning to help participant give their experienced clothing pieces a new life. I also used the YOAG funds to compile and mail mending kits to those that attended the workshop.

What was your most valuable takeaway?

I am grateful I had support from Ocean Wise to pursue my passion, furthering my skills in mending and in turn, share that with other ambassadors to help with Ocean Health.
