Project Lead

Healing with Nature Winter Retreat for Muslim women and girls aged 16+. The aim of the project is to provide an immersive nature based experience that promotes safety and inclusivity for Muslim women in nature. I believe that when we create meaningful and safe connections, we inspire people to eco action!

Project Description

The retreat was for Muslim women/girls aged 16+. We did loads of outdoor activities, such as: nature based relaxation, ice fishing, snow shoeing, skiing, beading, painting and journaling (indoors). The women built a bond of sisterhood while also connecting with the Canadian winter scape at Cedar Ridge Camp.

This project has been created in commemoration of the lives of all the victims of Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302, including two Ocean Bridge ambassadors, Danielle Moore and Micah Messent. We aspire to carry on their legacy and commitment to making the world a better place by creating long-lasting impacts with a firm commitment to driving positive change for the environment and our ocean. We will never forget the light that Danielle and Micah brought to the world and will continue to keep them in our hearts. To learn more about these two amazing people, please visit: Honouring Danielle and Micah  – Ocean Wise. This work is partially funded by the Commemoration Fund for Victims of Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 Tragedy

What was your biggest challenge?

My biggest challenge was pivoting from my original idea. I wanted to do two groups locally for men and one for women and children. Unfortunately due to unforeseen circumstances I was unable to do that. I’m grateful, however, for that situation which led me to pivot and think of an idea that went really well!

What was your most valuable takeaway?

My most valuable takeaway was the community that was built around this project & the long lasting impact of that. I received a lot of messages to inquire about collaborations and future programming. I’m excited to keep this initiative going.
