In the End – Deep-sea and Story Consultant
Project Details
In the End is a climate fiction novel about an intern on a secret deep-sea expedition. The story explores themes of imposter syndrome as an early career ocean professional, eco-anxiety, and the impacts of the climate emergency on the planet and global communities. Moronke Harris (The Imaginative Scientist) provided knowledge of the deep-sea ecosystem and experiences as an early career deep-sea researcher. This project has been created in commemoration of the lives of all the victims of Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302, including two Ocean Bridge ambassadors, Danielle Moore and Micah Messent. We aspire to carry on their legacy and commitment to making the world a better place by creating long-lasting impacts with a firm commitment to driving positive change for the environment and our ocean. We will never forget the light that Danielle and Micah brought to the world and will continue to keep them in our hearts. To learn more about these two amazing people, please visit: Honouring Danielle and Micah - Ocean Wise. This work is partially funded by the Commemoration Fund for Victims of Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 Tragedy.
Project Description
‘In the End is a climate fiction novel about an early career ocean professional named Amelia Rose. Amelia is an intern on a secret deep-sea expedition exploring uncharted territory and studying biodiversity in the deep sea.
The story explores themes of imposter syndrome as an early career ocean professional, eco-anxiety, and the impacts of the climate emergency on the planet and global communities. It aims to connect readers to the significance of the deep-sea ecosystem and why it must be protected from threats such as climate change and human activities such as deep-sea mining.
This grant supported hiring an early-career deep-sea researcher, Moronke Harris (The Imaginative Scientist). Moronke supported the story’s development and provided knowledge and details about the deep-sea ecosystem, technology, and marine life, through her experience as an early-career professional.

What was your biggest challenge?
The biggest challenge of this project was determining the structure of the story before starting the conversation with Moronke. It was hard to tell if some of the creative ideas would make a believable story, especially to scientists. However, Moronke was able to take the most creative ideas and find scientific research to support developing them further.
What was your most valuable takeaway?
My most valuable takeaway is how important it is to collaborate with others and build community. Novel writing and editing can feel isolating and having an inspiring and knowledgeable support system is helpful for accountability and motivation to share the story with others.
