Together We’re Building a Better Future for Our Ocean

We need the ocean, but the ocean also needs us!

Three billion people globally rely on seafood as an essential source of protein, and the global demand for seafood continues to rise by 2% every single year since the 60s. And the ocean provides far more than food: it supports jobs, stabilizes our climate, and produces half the oxygen we breathe. It is truly one of our greatest resources.

And World Ocean Day — June 8 — is a global moment to celebrate our ocean and inspire collective action to protect and restore it.

This World Ocean Day, we’re celebrating the impact we’re making together for our ocean’s future with @oceanwise.

We need the ocean, but the ocean also needs us. More than 70% of Earth is covered by ocean, and it supports over 80% of all species on the planet. From the air we breathe to the food we eat, the ocean is one of our greatest shared resources. It shapes our climate, feeds our communities, and connects people across cultures and coastlines.

Ocean Wise empowers communities and individuals to take action that protects and restores the ocean we all depend on. Making sustainable choices today helps ensure a thriving home for the generations who will inherit this planet tomorrow.

Ocean Wise is based in the traditional and unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples, including the territories of the xÊ·məθkwÉ™y̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and SÉ™lÌ“ílwÉ™taÊ”/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. We work across Turtle Island and beyond, supporting Indigenous peoples in their vital work on ocean conservation and biodiversity whenever possible or as we are invited to.
