Meet the Nudibranch

Part of the order Nudibranchia, nudibranchs are some of the most visually stunning creatures on Earth. These exotic sea slugs, known for their lustrous colours and intricate patterns, actually get their unique appearance from the food they eat.

Unlike other mollusks, they lack a shell, relying on chemical defences to survive. Some even harness toxins or stinging cells from their prey to become venomous themselves. Despite their soft appearance, nudibranchs are resilient and thrive in diverse marine environments, from coral reefs to icy depths.

Habitat

Found throughout the ocean worldwide, from the Arctic to Antarctica, the nudibranch can be found below the surface at up to 700 meters deep.

Alimentation

Their diet includes sponges, corals, anemones, hydroids, bryozoans, tunicates, algae, and sometimes other nudibranchs.

Predators

Their main predators include humans, fish, crabs, turtles, and other nudibranchs. These exotic sea slugs use their striking appearance as both camouflage and a warning to predators.

Special Skill

The nudibranch has feathery gills and alien-like sensory organs named rhinophores, which help them navigate their surroundings.
