We created a remote water monitoring portal and water monitoring hardware to upload remote water data measurements for Ocean Wise’s kelp nursery.

Project Description

For our project, we wanted to use the opportunity to immerse ourselves into the research world of ocean conservation. With the Seaforestation team ongoing work in kelp growing and replanting, this inspired us to reach out to them and see what we can do to help and learn more. This project came as Ocean Wise’s kelp nursery is located far from their head office. Having a real-time remote water monitoring would enable the tracking of water quality parameters such as temperature, salinity, pH, and nutrient levels, ensuring the optimal growth environment for kelp. A need was identified to provide alerts for any anomalies, and reduce the need for frequent on-site visits while improving the success rate of young kelplings at the nursery. To acheive our goal, we combined my (Nicole’s) prior knowledge of aquarium care taking and Sebastian’s background in engineering, we teamed up together to create these sensors and a kelp tracking log to further help the lab continue to improve their results in the future.

What was your biggest challenge?

The biggest challenged we faced during our project was managing short project timelines with a limited budget.

What was your most valuable takeaway?

Our most valuable takeaways were connections, friends, strategies to deal with eco-grief, empowerment.
