Ocean Wise Launches Hands-On Climate Education Kits in Prince Edward Island Libraries

Interactive, Maritime-focused Discovery Kits Bring Marine Science to Young Learners Across the Island

For immediate release

Charlottetown, PEI (October 30, 2025) – Young learners are invited to dive into climate action this fall with a new initiative from Ocean Wise and the PEI Public Library System. Thanks to support from the provincial Climate Challenge Fund, two new Maritime-focused Discovery Kits will be available to borrow from public libraries starting November 6.

The project, Building Resilient Futures: Climate Education for PEI” offers immersive kits blending science, Indigenous knowledge, and local climate realities to turn eco-anxiety into real-world action. Each kit offers an exciting, hands-on learning experience designed to spark curiosity and build climate literacy in learners from kindergarten to Grade 12. The kits will be available to borrow for island residents.

Each kit will include activities and lesson plans including:

  • Mini microscopes for up-close marine discovery
  • Marine artifacts like a 3D printed seal skull, krill, moon snail shells, and fish leather
  • Seal claws and other ocean treasures
  • Bilingual lesson plans and activities aligned with PEI’s curriculum

“We’re thrilled to offer free, hands-on ocean literacy tools tailored to the Maritimes—right through your local library,” says Jasmine Peacock, Director of Education at Ocean Wise. “With the support of the Climate Challenge Fund, we’re empowering youth to connect with our ocean and become active participants in protecting it.”

By connecting Island youth to their local marine environments and highlighting the lived experiences of Indigenous communities, Ocean Wise aims to foster the next generation of ocean stewards. This project is one of ten climate action projects funded by the provincial Climate Challenge Fund

To book a Discovery Kit, visit your local library or the Public Library Service Catalogue to request a kit.
