A workshop making drag sustainable, affordable and acessible for beginners! From designing clothes out of waste to performing on stage, drag queens Nova Gyna, Treyla Parktrash, and Amour Love guide participants in taking their first steps into the world of sustainable drag.
Project Description
This workshop was designed as a crash course for complete beginners who want to start doing drag, but aren’t sure how and where to begin, have a limited budget, and are concerned about plastic and waste pollution. In collaboration with Ocean Bridge ambassador Callum Soong, drag queens Nova Gyna, Treyla Parktrash and Amour Love guide participants in taking their first steps.
We begin with covering a brief history of drag and how it was used as a medium for activism and community building, then skills in creating one’s own drag persona, outfits and accessories, styling hair/wigs, make-up, and how to put on a fantastic show, all while reducing waste and negative impact on the environment through creative choices and materials.
Participants take away tips and tricks on how to re-imagine, re-use and re-purpose unwanted materials and items from home and their surroundings (including through community collaboration and resources), as well as how to make smarter choices in their purchases, to put together their drag look. These skills can be applied in many more areas of life, encouraging participants and those around them to think creatively of how they reach or surpass their waste reduction goals.

What was your most valuable takeaway?
