Project Description

Native Planters is a project launched in 2022 by Great Lakes Ambassadors to honour the teachings we received from Wikwemikong land and water protectors, boost soil and freshwater health, increase biodiversity, and tackle climate related natural disasters like extreme flooding. This project featured (1) An educational component in partnership with the Museum of Nature and Ecology Ottawa and (2) the planting of 300+ native plants at Heart Lake Conservation Area in partnership with the Toronto Region Conservation Authority and the Four Colours Drum Circle. Planting native plants and medicines demonstrates the power of native plants to restore freshwater ways, promote biodiversity, and ensure the health of local habitats for generations to come.

Project pilot impact:

  • Teach community members in the Ottawa area about native planting, biodiversity, and conservation. Give away 150+ native trees to attendees!
  • Plant 300+ native plants at Heart Lake Conservation Area in Toronto.
  • Engage 50+ volunteers in native planting.
  • Share native planting educational materials with 200+ Canadians
