Blue Is The New Green – Sustainable Giving Reaches New Depths With Gifts From Ocean Wise

Vancouver, B.C. – Sustainable giving has never been so simple. That’s why this year it’s time to take things to the next level…to sea level, that is. Make a splash this holiday season and give ocean-friendly gifts that make a difference by supporting the conservation of marine life, reducing carbon emissions and plastic use, and encouraging sustainable seafood harvesting practices. Choose from Ocean Wise’s list of gift ideas – featuring something for everyone – and feel good about contributing directly to ocean protection efforts. Now that’s deep.

Aquadopt an Aquatic Species

It is better to give than receive but it’s even better to give and receive! Symbolically adopt an aquatic animal and give a unique gift, support ocean conservation, and receive a tax receipt. Aquadopt Kits cost $55 and come with a certificate of adoption, fact booklet, collector card, plush toy, and $40 tax receipt.

Directly support the research and conservation of an iconic British Columbia species through Ocean Wise’s Wild Killer Whale Adoption Program. In honour of its 25th anniversary, this program received a new look with the introduction of a Killer Whale Aquadopt Kit. Special to this aquatic adoption, gifters can upgrade to support either a whale or a pod of killer whales, also receiving a photo and biography of the chosen whale and a USB featuring the melodic song of killer whale vocalizations. Ocean Wise participates in one of the longest continuous studies of the species globally. Visit www.killerwhale.org.

Symbolic adoptions aren’t limited to killer whales; Ocean Wise offers six other Aquadopt Kits for conservationists, including sea otters, seals, sharks, and –  new this year – majestic sea lions. In the 1980s, more than 80 percent of the world’s Steller sea lion population disappeared and, since 1993, Ocean Wise has been working to advance the understanding of this species. Steller’s Bay, Vancouver Aquarium’s newest exhibit, brings this ongoing research to the forefront. Also new this year are special edition Rialto and Hardy Kits that feature the two youngest rescued sea otters at Vancouver Aquarium and include a special magnet and collector card.

Purchase Aquadopt Kits at Vancouver Aquarium Gift Shop and online at www.vanaqua.org/aquadopt.

Give the Gift of Membership

Make a Donation

For the true blue ocean champions on your list, consider donating to Ocean Wise on their behalf. Donations are tax deductible and directly benefit ocean protection initiatives; gifters can send a special card or e-card to let the recipient know about the gift. Visit www.vanaqua.org/donate to contribute.

Do It Yourself

Break out that green thumb and make ocean-friendly homemade gifts for family and friends. Using Ocean Wise’s series of Here’s How videos, follow step-by-step instructions to craft plastic-free alternatives for everyday items, including body scrub, tinted lip balm, all-purpose cleaner, food wrap, and glitter. These online tutorials are seriously simple. Visit www.youtube.com/oceanwiseorg to watch.

Visit A One-Stop Green Shop

The Vancouver Aquarium Gift Shop is a one-stop shop to find sustainable gifts. Upcycling trends this holiday season with novel beer glasses created from repurposed beer bottles, beautiful handmade recycled glass sea stars, as well as exquisite recycled glass salt and pepper grinders designed by artist Kelly Robinson. Sustainable cooking is always in good taste; treat the foodies on your list with cookbooks like Lure, written by Ocean Wise Executive Chef Ned Bell, or Ocean Wise Cookbook 2, featuring recipes from long-time sustainable seafood champion chefs. Following an unprecedented rescue season for Vancouver Aquarium’s Marine Mammal Rescue Centre, a harbour seal plush is the perfect present for little aspiring veterinarians looking to practice their animal care techniques at home. In an effort to reduce unnecessary plastic, these plush toys do not contain nurdles or small plastic pellets found in most stuffed animals. Chubby and cute crochet whale key rings are stocking-stuffer ideal; quantities are limited and sales support the Rescue Centre as well. Reusable water bottles – like the Aquarium’s double-wall stainless steel version – help reduce single-use plastic bottle consumption, making them the ultimate gift for the holidays and for the oceans.

Shop in person at Vancouver Aquarium seven days a week during Aquarium opening hours or online around-the-clock.
