Ariane's placement with the Ocean Wise Plastic Reduction Program focused on local waste reduction practices across Canada.
Project Description
The #BePlasticWise movement from Ocean Wise exists to share the science behind ocean plastic pollution and by providing science-based tools, tips and resources that empower you to take action. The Plastic Reduction Program helps businesses reduce their plastic footprint and get ahead of proposed plastic bans. It’s a unique opportunity to tackle harmful and unnecessary plastic use!
During their placement, Ariane focused on creating a report that would help the Plastic Reduction Program Canada-wide. Some of the interesting research involved local waste management practices, as this impacts the accessibility of the Plastic Reduction Program.
Getting the opportunity to dive into waste management research in Canada was pretty relevant – helping the program make any steps towards better plastic reduction practices is a positive impact!
What was your biggest challenge?
Ariane had to learn to be fairly independent during the placement, as the project was fully virtual and that required a certain amount of self-direction.
What was your most valuable takeaway?
Overall, the people that Ariane met were very valuable connections and helped to make the placement a positive experience!

Every Christmas we put out snacks to graze on during the day. This years snack board featured 3 types of springhillsfish smoked trout dip- sriracha cheddar, lemon dill and maple. These dips are perfect for company, just keep them in the freezer until you’re ready to use then thaw overnight in the fridge then serve with veggies and/or crackers. They even deliver them right to your door!

Since 2014, our team has been building a catalogue of all the whales that visit waters around Prince Rupert, BC, updating it annually. By taking a photo of the underside of the humpback whale’s fluke (much like a fingerprint for humans) we can identify who the individual whale is. Usually, it will be a whale that we have seen before in the area. However, each year we do get some newbies in town - and we get to name them! There’s a new blog about our MERS / Oceanwise collaboration to look for evidence of how many Humpback Whales have scars from entanglement and collision. Because dead whales usually sink or strand in remote locations, their cause of death often cannot be determined. Scar studies help inform how serious these threats are, and how they need to be reduced.
In this collaboration, Ocean Wise is the lead for fieldwork and data collection and MERS leads project coordination and data analysis.
